The project is located in Mykonos and concerns the replacement of a wooden outdoor arched door with a metal one and the addition of a second one to the arched opening of the building’s entrance.
The owners of the residence commissioned QOOP to design, manufacture and install the two doors. The purpose was to replace the pre-existing solid door with a visually lighter construction while ensuring better natural lighting in the interior by using crystals for filling. The new entrance door was built with the same logic.
QOOP in this project used the products of the Swiss company OTTOSTUMM which specializes in the production of composite iron metal profiles. They consist of thin profile steel sections that ensure waterproofing and thermal insulation through a variety of complementary components applied to them, offering a complete framing system.
Through the study of the possibilities of OTTOSTUMM , the appropriate combination of profiles and components was chosen in order to achieve an overall delicate impression on the two doors, harmonizing them with the architecture of the building. This was also contributed by the liquid paint with a rust treatment applied to the metal elements, a roughness that was qualitatively combined with the stone walls on which they were placed.
The difficulties in this project were related to the arched shape of the doors and the type of framing mainly in the large door 3 meters wide, which was designed with two fixed sections at the ends and two openings in the center. The replacement of the wooden casing with a cross-section 10 centimeters, with a metal one with a total height of 3 centimeters - for a larger opening - required the door to be placed aligned with the inner wall so that the opening leaf is not obstructed by the existing stone arch. In order to ensure the stability of the doors, a 100/8mm arched lath was welded around the perimeter with a vertical direction to the casement in order to fix the frame to the main body of the stone to prevent it from breaking. The welding of the different profiles was done in the QOOP workshop, following the technical instructions of OTTOSTUMM , evolving their possibilities according to the project's requirements.
