PERGOLAS & BENCHES
Alpha Vagia project
Based on designs by Fotis Zapantiotis Associated Architects, qoop implemented the front canopies and seating areas of the residential complex on Vagia beach in Serifos.
The implementation of the canopies was a complex task. Due to their large size, the structures were assembled on-site to facilitate powder coating and transportation to the final destination. The construction logic involves metal frames - carrying the reeds - on gamma-shaped supports where the vertical part constitutes the columns while the horizontal part constitutes the beam. The edge of the metal beam on all four canopies was fixed to a special 8mm thick flange which is screwed to the building beams. The canopy frames were then screwed with M8 rivets to the beams with through-bolts. To support the reeds, a double corner (top-bottom) with a cross-section of 30/30/3mm was used. The gamma-shaped support system was made from a double cross-section of 80/20/1.5mm, while at the base of the column, a solid cross-section of the same dimensions was used to which the circular base made of 8mm laser-cut sheet metal was welded. The circular spacers were made from a Φ21mm tube.
The seats are independent structures that follow the geometry and morphology of the canopies. The legs were made from a solid cross-section of 80/20mm with a 5mm sheet metal overlay on the long sides to create a shadow. The frame was made from 5mm sheet metal, while the elements that form the seat backs were made from a 30/5mm sheet metal and a 21mm diameter tube. To protect the metal elements, galvanizing was applied before powder coated paint.
